Decisions

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

—James 1:5

Each time I pray, I have always asked God to guide me because few of us, if any, know our purpose in life. We make decisions every day. It could be to decide a minor thing like whether we should text him back, or as momentous as whether we take a job and move our life to a place where no one knows our name. Do we take that step into the unknown. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Sometimes, the decisions we make in life affect us for the rest of our lives; sometimes, they affect us only in the short term. As an LGBTQ+ person, one of our biggest decisions is when to come out to whom to tell our truth. Often, we do this with fear. Even though we might, we never know how someone will react. Will they love me as they always have? Will they look at me differently, good or bad? Will we see disgust and hatred in their eyes? Will they see compassion for the struggles we have endured to reach the decision to tell them this most significant part of our life?

John 16:33 tells us that “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”  Jesus faced many difficulties on this earth, but he endured them for us. We, too, will face many difficulties, but with God’s guidance we can overcome those difficulties. Matthew 7:13-14 are verses that I think of often when making decisions, ““Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” It always reminds me to the Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken.” The poem is one that is familiar to many of us:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

When we make decisions in life, we have to trust that God will guide us in the right direction. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” There may be times when we will be devastated by our decisions, but even in those times, we learn something about ourselves. We will make mistakes. Romans 3:23 tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But he will lift us back up if we ask and follow his guidance.

Just like when we come out and we are being our true selves, John 4:24 lets us know, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” We have to live our truth and trust that God will be our guide.

Woodchucks

When I saw this picture, I though he looked like a Vermonter, not a typical one (he doesn’t have a beard and he’s not wearing a flannel shirt), but maybe a preppy Vermonter. It’s the boots, socks, plaid blanket, and woodsy setting that made me think that. However, the model above, James Yates, is from England not Vermont. In Vermont he’d be known as a “flatlander,” much like I am. In Vermont, there are two types of people: woodchucks (native Vermonters) and flatlanders (everyone else).

Vermont Public radio have several different definitions and/origins for the term woodchuck to refer to Vermonters:

“In Vermont, the term woodchuck means someone who was born here.”

“…Second- or third-generation Vermonters.”

“Basically redneck or hillbilly…”“…A country person who, who literally chucked wood. I mean, they heated with wood.”

“Woodchuck is somebody that is very comfortable with machinery and guns and trucks.”

“Someone who, either real or perceived, has some sort of a relationship with the land.”

“…Grow their own food if they can, do their own plumbing, do their own wiring, do their own heating. In part because, well, when I first moved here, there wasn’t anyone else to do it.”

The term “flatlander” is easier to understand: Vermont is the Green Mountain State (Ver, from the French word for green, vert; and -mont from mountain.) Therefore, anyone not from Vermont is from flat land, though it’s a stretch as the Northeast has a lot of mountains.

If you’re wondering what an actual woodchuck is, it’s another name for a groundhog, of which, Vermont has plenty, and most people consider them a pest. I have several that live around my apartment. I see them quite regularly. So since today is Groundhog Day, (or maybe Woodchuck Day in Vermont) I thought I’d give you a little Vermont trivia.

Morning Coffee ☕️

If you’re a regular reader, you probably know that I don’t normally drink coffee in the morning. I prefer tea, particularly, Tazo’s Awake English Breakfast Tea (K-Cups). I always get my tea from Target. Sometimes, I drive down to New Hampshire to buy it myself, and sometimes, I order it from Target’s website, which is what I had most recently done last week. However, I stupidly did not open the box when it came a few days ago. I realized I had used the last k-cup in the box I had opened. So, last night I finally opened the box from Target only to discover that I’d been shipped Tazo’s Zen Green Tea. I can drink green tea, but it’s not my favorite. However, Tazo’s Zen Tea adds spearmint to their blend. I not only hate the taste of spearmint, but it is a trigger for my migraines, even if all I do is smell it. So, I started the process to return the box of tea to get what I ordered. Here’s the surprising thing (though since it is a grocery item, maybe it shouldn’t be), they are sending me a replacement immediately, but also told me to that I “do not need to send your original item back to us to receive your replacement. If you don’t want it, feel free to donate or recycle it.” At least that takes away the hassle of returning it.

I have loose tea bags, but honestly, I was too impatient to let the tea steep, so I decided to make a cup of coffee instead. I had some k-cups to go with dessert when I make actually have dessert at home. Normally, I would have just been patient and made tea with the tea bags, but I actually had some cream in the refrigerator. I rarely keep cream on a regular basis, but I’d needed it for a recipe, so I made some coffee. I’ll make do for a few days while I wait on the shipment from Target. Honestly, it wasn’t too bad; it was just out of my normal morning routine.

By the way, Isabella, who has been waking me starting at 3 am for the past week (I have not been getting up to feed her at 3 am, but she kept trying) seemed this morning like she was going to let me sleep a little longer this morning. However, I woke at 4 am needing to go to the bathroom, but I tried to go back to sleep afterwards. Apparently, my body decided it had enough sleep, plus my back was bothering me and I had woke with a headache. So, I wasn’t able to get comfortable enough again to go back to sleep, so I got up, fed Isabella, made breakfast, and made the aforementioned coffee.

Have a great day, everyone! It’s almost Friday!
