Migraine Days

I have been doing fairly well with my migraines lately. The combination of Qulipta, a once-daily CGRP medicine (most CGRPs are monthly injections), and quarterly Botox injections seems to be a working pretty well. I’m a month away from my next set of injections, but I’d gone nearly a month without a major migraine before I had one begin on Monday. It was a rainy Monday, and my migraine began with the rain. Thankfully, I was not at work since I’d already taken the day off to go to Burlington for my audiology appointment. However, I ended up calling in sick to work yesterday because I woke up continuing to have a migraine that seemed to be getting worse the longer I was awake. My migraine isn’t completely gone, but I have some things I need to take care of at work that do not need to wait any longer. If my migraine doesn’t improve as the day goes on, I may have to leave early, but I am going to give it a try.

This will be a shortened week at work because I will be going in today and tomorrow, then I’m scheduled to work from home on Friday. Next week will also be a shortened week because of Thanksgiving. We’ll actually close at midday on Wednesday and have the rest of the week off.

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

I’m glad that you work within such a supportive environment, Joe. I shudder when I remember how hostile some of my bosses were when I had medical problems.

I always file for intermittent FMLA leave each year for my migraines, so it would not matter how they felt, they could not be hostile to me. I am lucky though in having a very supportive boss.

I’m showing my age! FMLA came about in 1993. I entered the work force in 1979, I was lucky to get half a day off when my wife delivered a child. She spent six weeks in a hospital in the mid 1980’s and my God was that a nightmare. I had one particular epic battle with the Univ . Of Texas School of Law when I applied to take a few sick days to care for my roommate who was struggling with AIDS. At the FOURTH level of review, they admitted I had that right…because he lived with me and I provided for him financially…that really hurt. He would drive me to school so he could use my car as he didn’t own one, so everyone KNEW him..but that was the reality of hostility to gay men, particularly when they had AIDS. None of that helps you with your migraines however. Joe, I appreciated you doggedness. You are a fine example to this now retired gay man! Peace! Bruce

I’ve been following you for a while now and it’s so exciting to relate to someone else’s journey. I get chronic migraines, too, and I started my Ajovy injections on Monday. Seriously, a gay Christian academic??? I look forward to your posts every day. Much love and happiness. 😊

Thank you. I am glad you enjoy my posts.

I have tried Emgality (very painful shot and only cut my migraine days down from 30 to 15), Aimovig (was not effective at all and had nasty side effects), and Vyepti (which worked but was unaffordable). Qulipta seems to work fairly well with the addition of Botox. I hope you find success with Ajovy.

Joe is a gift, isn’t he? Like a little drop of goodness in my inbox. I was a gay academic from 1991-2002 but the culture wars had already started at my second law school position, so I declined to apply for tenure and went back into the practice of law. I’m fortunate that I’ve been financially independent so I have had the luxury of quitting a variety of jobs! But I’m the only openly gay man in my retirement community. So I value having Joe’s thoughtful opinions delivered to me not to mention the “uplifting” photographs. I’m sorry you guys have a common enemy in migraines. Bruce
