Mix-Up

I realized yesterday when I received appointment reminder text message on my phone that my dermatology appointment that I thought was yesterday is actually today. I’m glad I figured it out before I showed up for the appointment. I had the date correct on my personal calendar but had put it on the wrong date for my work calendar, and I had been looking at my work calendar. I ended up still leaving work at noon because I had a migraine and needed to go home and go to bed. So, instead of a full work from home day today, I will only be working from home for half a day.

I have no plans for the weekend. The regular season for college football is finished last week, and the only game on this weekend that I might care about watching is the SEC Championship Game tomorrow between Georgia and Texas. I’m not as interested in either team as I would be if Alabama was playing in the championship, so I may or may not watch it. It will be according to how bored I am and what else is going on.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

Joe, what is the SEC championship? What sport is involved?

It’s American football. The SEC is the Southeastern Conference, which is one of the major (if not the most important) collegiate sports conferences. Usually, the winner of the SEC Championship goes on to be part of the college football playoffs.

Joe, many thanks for the explanation but should those college students not be busy at tutorials or hard at work in the library and diligently handing in their academic assignments and projects on time and swotting for exams rather than running around football fields, almost to a professional level.

Of course at UK universities everyone plays informal sports, and there is the annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race on the Thames and a cricket match at Lords, but these are done in spare time.

At most universities, athletes have special tutors to make sure they are not missing classes, getting their assignments done in time, and studying for exams.

I’ll skip over today’s man. Beards and tattooes do nothing for me.

Thank you for saying that! In full agreement!

I knew this guy wouldn’t be for everyone, but I know some, including me, like the look.

He strongly resembles Olivier Giroux, an incredibly sexy French soccer player who formerly played for Arsenal, my English premier league team…Olivier has the beard, but more subdued tats. Some funny sportscaster referred to him as “the meaty French forehead” and my straight Gunners friends in Louisville always teased me about my adoration of him..And yes, I did buy a personalized jersey. There used to be a glorious bit of video of him walking around fully nude in a French locker room…what can I say? The man has a body made to be lusted after!

I’m not a fan of tattoos either but I like the rest of the photo. Too bad he’s not facing forward.

Gosh. No boredom or football here! Tonight is Amahl and the Night Visitors at church. Saturday is a “pitch in” (I’d say pot luck) dinner for one of the two gay social groups I belong to, and then Sunday after church I’m driving to Cincinnati to take my grandsons there to see Gladiator II. Monday morning, I plan to a take a friend to brunch and then head back to Indy.

Gary is one of three guys I’ve known since the third grade. Gary’s wife died 18 months ago and he is a lost ball in the weeds. They moved to Cincinnati after we graduated from law school. Craig and his husband moved to Florida. Only Lewis remains in Louisville…When my college friend Jim died six weeks ago, a few people thought he was my oldest friend. Nope…I’ve known Gary, Craig and Lewis since 3rd grade. And I have two guys I met in 10th grade who are also very important to me. One of them remains in Louisville and the other, now retired to North Carolina after living in Chicago, and I have a very strong intellectual connection. I went to visit David and his wife in Jan of 2023. David sends me esoteric essays, indeed I got one today. So he keeps me mentally stimulated.

I rather enjoyed Giving Tuesday this week. I have made donations to five different non-profits in honor of various friends. I went to the liquor store yesterday and bought liquid refreshments for three of the folks in our dining room. Our entire retirement community donates to a Christmas fund for all the hourly employees, which serves as a way of not having to tip. Those checks were also distributed yesterday. But I like to do a bit more…I don’t think the gift fund has kept up with inflation. So I like to add to their joy with my supplemental gifts! And because of my medical issues, I stopped drinking, so it’s a nice way to vicariously “enjoy” alcohol.

Life goes on! Thanks for the gift you give us daily in these posts, Joe!
