About Joe

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

Today marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day, bringing the Second World War to an end. There will be formal ceremonies.

This morning King Charles made a fine speech on the radio and recalled the words on the memorial at the war cemetery at Kohima, the site of some of the most intense fighting where a Japanese army were attempting to make a strategic thrust into North East India. The last ditch defence by the 2nd British Division has been likened to King Leonidas’ stand at Thermopylae in 480BC:

The words at Kohima of John Maxwell Edmonds (inspired by the famous epitaph by Simonides of Ceos) read:

WHEN YOU GO HOME, TELL THEM OF US AND SAY,

FOR YOUR TOMORROW, WE GAVE OUR TODAY.

On a less sombre topic, do you know please who is the sexy model in today’s image. The background is wonderfully original.
