Intense Migraine

Thank God today is my work-from-home day. I woke up with one of the worst migraines I’ve had in a while—the kind where the pain is so bad it brings on intense nausea. Honestly, it was almost bad enough that I forgot to write a post this morning. Hopefully, my meds will kick in soon so I can actually get something done today.

In the meantime, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

Poor you Joe. Is there no relatively simple answer to your constant battle with migraines? A darkened room is said to be fairly effective.

I thank the Almighty that I have had no really serious medical problems, apart from a scare of thyroid cancer, which proved to be benign.

There really isn’t a simple answer—partly because scientists still don’t fully understand what causes migraines. I do what I can to ease the pain: I’m already in a dark room, I avoid strong smells and loud sounds, and even typing this takes adjustments like wearing blue-light glasses (they make special migraine glasses, but the pink lenses are pricey) and keeping my phone in dark mode. The rain doesn’t help either, since I’m very sensitive to weather changes. And with my Botox worn off, the migraines have been worse than usual—thank goodness I go for my next treatment on Wednesday.
