About Joe

Unknown's avatar
I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

And, why do they need to be glued to their phone screens even while exercising? Is there no respite from mobiles. They need an IT holiday and to spend more time talking to real people. My phone lives mostly in my pocket. It’s mostly a question of self-discipline.

The reason for the phone being out in this pic is because he’s taking a picture, but most guys who may have their phone out while exercising is because of the music they are listening to. If I’m on the treadmill, I tend to prop up my phone so that I can read with the Kindle app. If I’m reading, I’m not focused on how long I’m on the treadmill and any discomfort I might feel because I’m tired. However, like you said, some guys just need to put their phones away.

I know athletes like their music but gyms often have awful blaring music to “encourage” the gym bunnies.

In my only visit to a gym I asked if the music could be turned off or at least turned down. The manager asked what music would I prefer. I suggested the barcarole from Offenbach or Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto. Being a working class oik he of course had had no classical music education and looked puzzled.

He asked me where was my music. I replied “in my memory” but it could not compete with his gym’s rubbishy stuff.

        I did not return.

You try explaining to such folk that silence is golden.

Amen, Amen, Amen. I agree 100%. When I use to do a lot of walking the birds and other noises in the area were far more a turn on than the phone and music. Do people who are always on the phone even have a brain? Do they think? Does one idea push another? They must be so un-creative to always have to have something or someone else in their world. How sad. I have to wonder will they ever be ok when they are alone? Do they ever take even a moment to be alone? I really can’t wait until the satellite falls from the sky.
