Five Days

First, I want to thank everyone for their kind words yesterday about my depression. I know it will get better. My depression tends to go in waves with highs and lows. All of you will never know how much it means to me that you care enough to read my daily musings and ramblings. ❤️

Today begins five days of not needing to go anywhere. I’m working from home today and Tuesday, but at least I don’t have to go to the museum, though I have a lot of work to do today, but it’s work that I enjoy. I’m preparing for a class I’ll be teaching in a few weeks. I love getting bogged down creating a PowerPoint presentation. Some people may find that boring, but I always find it to be a lot of fun.

And while I don’t have to go anywhere for the next five days, I am planning to go to the grocery store first thing this morning, so I can beat the crowds I expect stores to have over the holiday weekend. I also hope that I can get out and enjoy some of the beautiful weather we are expecting today through Sunday. Our forecast calls for sunny weather with highs in the low 70s, which I consider perfect weather. Next week won’t be as nice with rain every day and highs in the low 60s. The temperature I don’t mind, and while I like rain when I don’t need to leave my apartment, I don’t like it when I have to get out in it.

While Memorial Day is a holiday only in the United States, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and nice weather that you too can enjoy.

Rain, Rain… ☔️

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day.

Today begins at least four straight days of rain. The weather app on my phone says that it will only be light rain for parts of the day; however, my local meteorologist says the rain will be heavier and more long lasting. While the forecast calls for scattered showers with heavier rains this afternoon.

Apparently, this means my commute home is expected to be in heavy rain. Maybe, it won’t be so bad. I hate driving in the rain in Vermont, especially this time of year. Vermont is not very good about keeping the lines on the roads painted, and they always fade during winter. They often get repainted in the summer, but for now, it’s hard to see the lines.

The heaviest rain is predicted for Friday when a severe storm hitting the southern United States will reach us. It is doubtful the rain will even come close to the severe storms in the South. We have severe snowstorms in Vermont, but rarely do we ever have severe rain storms. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard thunder or seen lightning up here. In the South, we’d get very heavy rainfall, especially during the tropical storm season, but here in Vermont, it’s usually mostly very light rain.

As long as I can stay home and read while it rains, I don’t mind it. I only get aggravated by rain when I have to be out in it. I’m off work tomorrow, and I have errands to run. I’m hoping there is a break in the rain while I’m running them. The rest of the time we are expected to get rain, I should be able to just stay home and curl up with a book and Isabella.

This Weather Sucks!

I am packing this morning for my trip. I’d have liked to have packed last night, but circumstances prevented it. With the wet heavy snow we have gotten in the last 36 hours (more than a foot of snow), I lost power at my apartment. I have emergency lamps to use and some candles, but I had hoped the electricity would be back on by this morning. It’s been out for nearly 24 hours, and there no estimated time for repairs. I have to go pick up my rental car between 10:30 and 11 am (the university requires we use rental cars for longer trips), so I’ll get packed and head out in a bit. I hate leaving Isabella here without electricity, but a neighbor will check in her, and I’ll be sure she has plenty of food and water. I’ll be back on Sunday. Surely, we will have power by then. I hope we have electricity back before I have to leave. Nothing is going as planned.

Snow, Snow, Snow

Even though it is officially spring, winter is hanging on in Vermont as we are expecting a nor’easter over the next few days. Most of the state is under a winter storm warning and a wind advisory. This means, we are expecting to start with a wintry mix that will turn into 10-15” of a wet, heavy snow and high winds of 20-30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. What does all of that mean? Travel conditions will be sketchy and likely difficult, and we are likely to lose electricity.

When we have this kind of weather, I wish I could just stay home. However, that’s not going to be possible. I have a doctor’s appointment later this afternoon, about the time the snow is to begin, but maybe the snow will either be light on my way home, or it will start later than expected. I might be able to work from home, but I’m guessing that won’t be likely. Then on Friday, I have to drive to Syracuse, New York, to present at a workshop on Saturday. This late winter storm is forecasted to be over by early Friday morning, so as long as Vermont and New York keep up with plowing and treating the roads, it shouldn’t be a bad trip. Besides, I’m looking forward to the workshop Saturday.

Stayed In

I stayed inside all weekend, just me and Isabella. From Friday night through all day Saturday, we got about 15 inches or so of snow. I wasn’t going to go anywhere. The weather can sometimes be strange in Vermont. We haven’t had a lot of snow this winter, but now that it’s officially spring, we got our only major snowstorm of the year. Then, it was sunny, without a cloud in the sky yesterday. Today, it’s 10 degrees outside as I write this, however, by midafternoon today, we are expected to reach temperatures in the low 40s. With this type of weather, it’s no wonder that I’ve had sinus issues all weekend and still this morning. My nose feels like it’s on fire and my sinus cavities feel like they could explode at any minute. Hopefully, it will get better as the day goes on.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great week!

The Snow Is Back

Just after Burlington broke their record for the most consecutive winter days without snow on the ground (16 days), we finally received more than a dusting of snow. The forecast had called for 2-4” of snow. Luckily, when I looked outside, it appears we got closer to the 2” than 4”.

I’m glad that it wasn’t too much snow because today is not a day I could take a snow day and work from home. I have important meetings at the museum all day today, one will even cause me to be there an hour late. Then, I have a business dinner to continue the meetings tonight. At least the museum is paying for the dinner tonight. I’m just crossing my fingers that all goes well today.

Sunny Week ☀️

We do not get an abundance of sunshine in Vermont, but this last week has been different. It has been sunny each day this week beginning on Sunday. It won’t last long. The clouds will roll in tonight and stay for the next week. There will be some clouds this morning, but they should clear out by this afternoon and allow for another sunny day today. The sun has been a mood lifter for many people in Vermont. The forecast shows that the sun might return next Saturday, but Valentine’s will most likely be a cloudy day and cold day, not that I much care about Valentine’s Day since it will just be me and Isabella.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Sunrise/Sunset

As we are about to enter February, the days are getting noticeably longer. Sunrise this morning was at 7:09 am and today’s sunset finally will be at 5:00 pm. On the winter solstice, sunrise wasn’t until 7:22 am and sunset was 4:15 pm. We still won’t actually see the sun today. It will be another cold, cloudy day. It’s 21 degrees right now, and if all goes as forecasted, we’ll reach above freezing at 34 degrees. We are not expecting to see any sun again until Saturday, but our low also gets down to 13 degrees. And so goes winter in Vermont.

I plan to be at work early today because I’m teaching an 8 am class, and I want to get there early to consult with the professor and also not to feel rushed getting ready for class. The rest of the day should be fairly smooth until my dental appointment this afternoon. No offense to any dentist or dental hygienist (I’m having my teeth cleaned today) out there, but I hate going to the dentist. While seeing the dentist for dental work is never pleasant, I like my dentist, and it’s always a pleasure to chat with him before the torture begins. I am not as enthusiastic about seeing the hygienist. She’s nice (I can’t say that about all the hygienists I’ve known in the past), but like most hygienist I have known, she talks incessantly about my teeth and loves to tell me all the things she thinks I’m doing wrong, even though I’m actually already doing what she suggests.

C’est la vie. At least the days are getting longer.

Brrrr 🥶

As my weatherman said this morning, we are entering the freezer. It’s going to be cold. Our low temperatures for the next four days are: 3° F, -1° F, 0° F, 0° F. We won’t get out of the teens this weekend, but we will rise to 30° F on Monday. I don’t mind the cold weather as long as there isn’t much wind. However, we are expecting mild winds over the next few days that will lower what the temperatures actually feels like, so those lows will feel more like -6° F, -11° F (the high tomorrow which is 10° F but will feel like -1° F), -8° F, -6° F. I don’t mind the cold as long as I don’t have to be out in it for long. I’d rather live in a climate where the temperature are below freezing than to live in a climate with over 100° F with feel like temperatures well above that. Where I grew up in the South, it was humidity that we dreaded, not the wind. Down there, the wind provided some relief.

I’m just glad that I don’t have to go anywhere until Monday. I can stay warm and cuddle up with Isabella, who will alway find somewhere warm to be. Have a great weekend, everyone! Hopefully, you can stay warm and cozy.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

If this guy was in Vermont today, he’d (sadly) be wearing pants. As I write this, it’s 9°F (-12.78°C). The wind is making it feel like 0°F (-17.78°C). This weekend Vermont (and most of the northeast) is expected our heaviest snowfall yet. Where I am, the current prediction is 6.25”, but that number keeps changing. Luckily, it is expected to mostly fall during Sunday morning and be a dry powdery snow. Our last major snowfall was a wet heavy snow, which is a lot more work to clear off my car. The good thing about the snow being expected on Sunday is that I don’t have to go anywhere and when I do have to return to work on Monday, the roads should be clear. When the snow stops Sunday, I’ll go outside and clear off my car so I don’t have to do it Monday morning. Anyway, I’m just looking forward to (mostly) staying in and staying warm.
