Foul Mood

Do you ever have those days when everything seems to piss you off? Honestly, I think we all do. Yesterday was one of those days to me. Someone pissed me off because they were putting their nose where it didn’t belong. They made a comment that they should have kept to themselves, but instead of backing off, they doubled down and made it even worse. I tried to be the better person about it, but they just kept pissing me off. It put me in an incredibly fouls mood. I did my best to go to my “happy place” before I fell asleep last night, but the whole thing was still bothering me. Sometimes, it’s just too difficult to try to always be the nice person and try to defuse bad situations. Most of the time I want to just scream, “Go fuck yourself!” However, I know I won’t. Instead, I’ll just remove that person from the equation and go about my business. Quite honestly, they just aren’t worth my time and effort.

Sexy and Campy

Before the pandemic, there were a group of men who’d have a get together every month at one of the bars in Burlington to party and raise some money for charity. It was the only gay men’s event I knew of. The group is called Burly Bears, and the monthly events were always fun when I’d go. Burly Bears has been getting together for 16 years. While the Burly Bears were not able to get together during most of the pandemic, and I have not been to one since 2019, it looks like they are trying to get back to doing this monthly.

There’s one on the last Friday in January for the Burly Bears Birthday Bash. Each of the events has a theme and suggestion for how to dress. This event will be “70s Sexy.” I doubt I’ll go, but it is always fun trying to decide what to wear to one of these things. I was born in ‘77, so I don’t remember the 70s, and it’s too recent of a history for me to have studied. If I was going to go, I’m not sure what I’d wear.

I’d considered this Tom of Finland t-shirt with a pair of jeans, but I can only find it on Amazon from a place in Thailand. It wouldn’t arrive until at least next month. I thought this shirt could classify as both sexy and campy. However, without that possibility, I’m kind of at a loss. Any suggestions? I would prefer campy but not too outrageous because I’m pretty sure I can’t pull off sexy.

Port Town

Port Town
By Langston Hughes – 1901-1967

Hello, sailor boy,
In from the sea!
Hello, sailor,
Come with me!

Come on drink cognac.
Rather have wine?
Come here, I love you.
Come and be mine.

Lights, sailor boy,
Warm, white lights.
Solid land, kid.
Wild, white nights.

Come on, sailor,
Out o’ the sea.
Let’s go, sweetie!
Come with me.

Ugh! It’s Monday

Like the majority of people who work weekdays and are off on weekends, I hate Mondays. Back when I was in school, I was always full of dread on Sunday nights. I knew I’d have to go to school the next day. It wasn’t any better when I was teaching. Having to face those hellions I tried to teach was enough to drive anyone crazy. I love my current job, though of course there are things that drive me crazy there too. It’s just that after being off for the holiday break, I didn’t get back into the swing of things last week. I only worked in my office half a day last week: migraine, work from home, medical appointments, etc. So, this is really my first Monday back at work.

I’ll be going in late because I have an 8 am doctor’s appointment for a regular checkup. I had my annual bloodwork done last week, so I have an appointment to talk over the results with my doctor and check on other things. One good thing is that he will probably take me off my diabetes medication. My A1C is still low (5.7), and he’d said last time that if it was still under 6.0, he’d declare me a diet controlled diabetic. We’ll see if that happens. I like my doctor and have a great relationship with him, and for the first time in my life, I can be completely open and honest with him and he’s a good listener.

So, even though I didn’t want to get up this morning, it is Monday after all, hopefully, the week will go smoothly. I hope all of you have a great week.

 Shall We Gather at the River?

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

—Revelation 22:1

Shall We Gather at the River?
by Robert Lowry

1 Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Refrain:
Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

2 On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day. [Refrain]

3 Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we ev’ry burden down;
Grace, our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown. [Refrain]

4 Soon, we’ll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace. [Refrain]

This has long been one of my favorite Christian hymns. I used to sing it often back when I was my old church’s song leader. “Shall We Gather at the River?” or simply “At the River” are the popular names for the traditional Christian hymn originally titled “Beautiful River.” The song’s lyrics refer to the Christian concept of the anticipation of restoration and reward and reference the motifs found in Revelation 22:1–2—a crystal clear river with the water of life, issuing from the throne of heaven, all presented by an angel of God.
