Taking It Easy

I’m taking a vacation day, ostensibly to recover from my colonoscopy, but I’m feeling fine. I slept much of the day after I got home yesterday. If you’re wondering, the colonoscopy went great. Nothing was found, and I don’t have to have another one for ten years.

I do have a few things to do today besides taking it easy. I plan to do some laundry this morning, and go to the grocery store this afternoon. I also have an appointment at a local art gallery about possibly teaching a class for them. A little extra money never hurt anyone, and it’s a subject I look forward to teaching.

One last thing, since I haven’t posted an Isabella pic this week (and I think I forgot to last week), here you go:

Ugh!

I’m at the age when I have to have a colonoscopy, and it’s scheduled for this morning. I’m dreading having this procedure, but hopefully, it won’t be too bad.

On a more cheerful note, the guy above is the actor/model/nurse Nate Crnkovich. He was the winner of Mister Supernational, and works as a traveling nurse. Sorry guys, he appears to be straight. With all that said, he also played a model in the show Minx in which he was as a living version of Michelangelo’s David. You can see a clip of this here.

I’ve Got Nothing

I really don’t have anything to say today. The week is half over, and that also means the Republican National Convention is almost over. I have refused to watch any of the fascist rally, and I honestly have nothing to say about it today. Maybe later in the week, but I’m not in the mood nor do I have the energy to rant about Republicans today.

The Secret in the Mirror

The Secret in the Mirror
By Alberto Ríos

The mirror is dirty from the detritus of dailiness—
I look in the mirror and am freckled.

A week out from being cleaned, maybe two, maybe more,
The Milky Way shows itself in the secret silver,

This star chart in my own bathroom,
Aglow not in darkness but with the lights on,

Everything suddenly so clear.
It is not smear I am looking at, but galaxies.

It is not toothpaste and water spots—
When I look in the mirror, it is writing and numbers,

Musical notes, 1s and 0s, Morse-like codes, runes.
I am looking over into the other side,

And over there, whoever they are, it turns out
They look a lot like me. Like me, but freckled.

About this Poem

“Whatever our professional posturing, this poem speaks to the everyday lives we also lead—not cleaning the bathroom sink quite as much as we perhaps should, not always controlling the floss strings of good intentions now turned wild, not vacuuming nearly enough. But even in the mundane, we have, always at hand, surprise, surprise at its most savory in that we have least expected to find it where it is not advertised.” —Alberto Ríos

About the Poet

Born in 1952, Alberto Ríos is the inaugural state poet laureate of Arizona and the author of many poetry collections, including A Small Story about the Sky (Copper Canyon Press, 2015). In 1981, he received the Walt Whitman Award for his collection Whispering to Fool the Wind (Sheep Meadow Press, 1982). He served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 2014 to 2020.

Slept In

I didn’t have a great night of sleep Saturday night, so I seem to have made up for it last night. I fell asleep reading at 7 pm last night. I woke up around 8:30 pm and tried to stay awake until my usual 10 pm bedtime. I ended up being able to finish the book I was reading and went to sleep at 10:15 pm. I did not wake up until my 5:30 am alarm went off. I vaguely remember Isabella trying to wake me earlier, but she was obviously unsuccessful. She can usually tell when I really need my sleep, and while she’ll try to wake me, she doesn’t do it with the usual fervor and gives up easily.

Have a great week everyone!
