About Joe

Unknown's avatar
I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

I hope the ultrasound has gone well.

My former wife was told that our second child was going to be a girl. You can imagine the surprise when a son arrived. That was 1983 so I’m confident the process is much better–indeed, I know it is. because I had an ultrsound on my thyroid Monday

I hear ultrasound and I default to pregnancy

It went well. They didn’t find anything, which is good. They just still don’t know what is causing the pain.

It’s so much fun waiting as they eliminate possible sources. I truly know what you are going through! I had lab work on Tuesday morning, ordered by two doctors. I have had three messages from my neurologist but zip from my primary, who ordered tests for pancreatic function. I know I could access the test results on the health portal, but I am not about to impose on the doctors in my family for an interpretation. My mind is clicking over about the MRI on Wednesday. And they wait in Casablanca….and they wait.

Yeah, the nurse practitioner, who I had seen already and had ordered the blood tests and ultrasound, forwarded the ultrasound results to my primary to decide the next step.

I wonder if it has to be seen by a radiologist too? It’s all so confusing! The I U Health System here is famous for flagging any and everything that is slightly off. Some folks feel it is motivated by financial incentives, but I am quite sure that is not correct. They are just zealous about results. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before, but when I was two I had a mild case of polio and that makes me a poster boy for having a lousy immune system and being hypersensitive to medications and what not. That’s my earliest memory in life but honestly I’m thankful for it. When the AIDS crisis destroyed our community I was rather fearless in interacting with men who were very close to death. Watching so many friends (and lovers) die, I somehow had courage to stand up for our community when it was most certainly unpopular. I had a financial and personal sense of security, so I was glad to be the one interviewed on TV. Pardon my digression but I’m currently working with a gay man from an Hispanic background and a transgender woman, and that courage is still needed. Good night, Joe!

The ultrasound results were reviewed by the radiologist. I had originally been told that he might not review the results until next week, but he reviewed them immediately and so did the nurse practitioner.
