Snowy Thanksgiving

When I woke up yesterday morning, it was snowing. It continued snowing throughout the day, and when I went to bed last night, it was still snowing. The snow finally stopped sometime last night. Because the temperature was above freezing most of yesterday, we only had about 2-3” of accumulation, but we probably got about 5+” of snow in total. I walked out side a few times yesterday to take pictures of the snow for some friends, but mostly I stayed in and watched the snow from my windows.

I had a lowkey Thanksgiving, just me and Isabella. I had turkey and cornbread dressing along with some butter beans. I love cornbread dressing. It’s my favorite food for winter holidays. I’ve had other types of dressing and stuffing mad with stale bread, but for me, nothing compares to cornbread dressing. I ate way too much of it yesterday, but it was damn good dressing.

Fo those of you in the United States, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and for those outside the U.S., I hope you have had a wonderful week. I will not be going Black Friday shopping today. I put in orders at two different places to get a few sales items that I needed, so I will be venturing out today but only to quickly run in stored and pick up my purchases. I hate the crowds at stores on Black Friday, but I am hoping the two places I have to go, CVS and Petco will not be as crowded. They are not the usual Black Friday shopping destinations. Is anyone actually going out Black Friday shopping? What about Small Business Saturday, when we are encouraged to shop at local small businesses? Or, are you waiting until Cyber Monday for those online deals?

Tomorrow, will likely be another lowkey day. It’s my birthday, and I will watch the Iron Bowl, i.e. the Alabama vs. Auburn football game. It’s a big rivalry game, especially in Alabama. I might watch the Egg Bowl today (Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State), and possibly the Lone Star Showdown ( Texas vs. Texas A&M) Saturday night. If you have ever seen The Best LIttle Whorehouse in Texas, then you should be familiar this particular rivalry. Besides, “The Aggie Song” is probably the best part of that movie, and the gayest football song and dance numbers in history (Do other football song and dance numbers exist?), but I digress.

The only thing that I might do this weekend is to go see the Wicked movie. Has anyone seen it yet? I’ve never seen the musical, but I read the book many years ago. I have always been a fan of The Wizard of Oz, and I always found the new perspective on the Wicked Witch of the West to be pretty interesting.

Anyway, that’s all I have for today. I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe

I will be interested in your take on Wicked. Last weekend my partner and I did the whole Glicked thing, seeing Gladiator at 1 pm and Wicked at 4. Like you, I have not seen the stage play but read the book when it first came out and loved it. Since then I have read most of Maguire’s books and have liked most of them. His take on Snow White was superb. Cinderella not so much, and by book 4 of his Oz books I was ready for something different. As for the two movies, I am not a fan of “action” movies and love musicals. My partner is the opposite. That said, I thought Gladiator was the better movie and all those hot half naked men. Let us know your take on Wicked.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HUGS AND BLESSINGS CELEBRATING 🥳 YOU!

I hope you have a great time seeing Wicked. It is definitely on my list. Just know that it is only Act 2 of the musical. Wicked 2 will be out next year. I hate it when they do that to us, but it’s already 2hr40min. Enjoy!

I’d like to think of the photo of the one young man from the back as you, Joe. It’s awesome.

Here’s wishing you the happiest birthday ever, Joe. Many more.

Joe, let me add my birthday wishes to those of your other devotees! It has just started snowing here in Indianapolis…I have had an awkward Thanksgiving…I had lunch here in our dining room, seated with one rather grumpy woman who never married and used to work for the CIA. There was also a widow at the table, she was nice enough, yet obviously not eating with either of her children…It was a labor to keep steering the conversation to pleasant topics. Fortunately, the wait staff would stop by and poke me or make other gestures to signify that everyone knew I was stuck at a bad table!

And then I got hit with some major intestinal pain…I had gone out to a very good Italian place on Wednesday and I’m pretty sure the rich tomato sauce triggered this…I have both kidney disease and IBS…that Italian meal was a disaster for other reasons, not related to the food. I was with a gay couple and they were being disagreeable when I picked them up and the tension only increased. They both have significant health challenges and neither can drive, and they are rather alone and get on each others nerves.

I was supposed to travel to Cincinnati today and I’ve modified those plans. I’m not sure if I will go tomorrow…

I had plans to take my grandsons in Cincy to see Gladiator II on Saturday, but I’d say 50/50 chance I won’t make the trip.

Shopping on Black Friday? No thanks! What with nine grandchildren, I have my older two sons trained to create lists on Amazon for me and then click click click…I know Amazon is not universally loved, but hey, I’m a stockholder and it’s simple! My ex-wife found this wonderful toy store in London that sells wooden toys of very fine quality. So she and I jointly buy things from their website for the girls in Wimbledon. My son and his wife went to the Cotswolds yesterday…which is just lovely and still fairly rural area…high end homes have contributed to heavy weekend traffic. Obviously Thanksgiving is an American holiday so they are joining some other ex-pats on Saturday for what is traditionally American…2 year old Jessica was so funny…she pretends she is nursing her teddy bear to mimic her mom nursing Stephanie. She keeps saying “Bear needs milk.”

Finally, I loved the video from Best Little Whorehouse! I’ve never had any connection to A & M other than driving through College Station a few times, but I did work at the U T School of Law in Austin, so that makes me a tea-sipper. I have been to LaGrange and have driven by Miss Mona’s place. She had already closed down the business.

The “Watchdog” reporter from Houston was just so completely over the top. His stardom came from doing a restaurant reviews and when they went into one kitchen, rats poured out, and it was all filmed. Marvin Zindler and “there is slim in the ice machine.”

Best wishes to you Joe, and many happy returns. My greetings to all who read this words via this very thoughtful and interesting website created by a refugee from Alabama!
