Moment of Zen: Motorcycles

Years ago, when I was in graduate school and living in Mississippi, I remember stopping at a CVS and spotting a shirtless guy sitting on a motorcycle across the street. I’ve never been particularly interested in motorcycles, but damn, that man had a body that could stop traffic! He was perched on what we used to call a “crotch rocket,” a sleek, racing-style motorcycle that has the rider leaning forward over the handlebars. Now, I know riding without a helmet or protective clothing is dangerous, but at that moment, motorcycle safety was not exactly what was on my mind. Let’s just say that while his crotch rocket was parked, he had my motor purring—and the rocket in my own crotch was more than ready for liftoff! It’s been probably twenty years, and I still remember that glorious sight. Apparently, some things have a way of staying in your head long after they’ve left your rearview mirror.

I began my life in the South and for five years lived as a closeted teacher, but am now making a new life for myself as an oral historian in New England. I think my life will work out the way it was always meant to be. That doesn't mean there won't be ups and downs; that's all part of life. It means I just have to be patient. I feel like October 7, 2015 is my new birthday. It's a beginning filled with great hope. It's a second chance to live my life…not anyone else's. My profile picture is "David and Me," 2001 painting by artist Steve Walker. It happens to be one of my favorite modern gay art pieces. View all posts by Joe
