Winter Has Come Early

The snows came yesterday. We got at least 6 inches of snow. No snow plow came to my apartment before work, when at least 4 inches had accumulated. When I got home, no snow plow came to get the 6 inches of accumulation. I texted my landlord to see why no snow plow had been by. They had been everywhere else around us, including the property he owns next door, yet no plow for us. The funeral home across the street was plowed 5 times yesterday; we were not plowed once. After waiting hours for a response from my landlord, I finally got one. He said he had talked to the plow driver and they had decided to let it melt on its own. He said it would be warm enough last night and today to melt it. I’m no physicist, but doesn’t the temperature have to get above freezing for snow to melt. The high today will be 22 with a low of 7. Tomorrow the high will be 28 with a low of 23, and Friday, we are expecting another 6 inches of snow. When will it melt? How will it melt? Am I missing something? Please tell me if I am, because I really want to understand.

Sweater Weather

One of my favorite times of year is here. I love the fall in New England. It’s sweater weather. Back in Alabama, fall was just an extension of summer. It would be cool in the mornings, hot during the day, and cool at night…if the sky was clear. Here, the weather is just nice. I know it’s a little too chilly for some people. The snow has come too early. The winds are strong. All of that is okay by me. We haven’t had any heavy snow yet. Thank goodness, because I don’t get my snow tires until tomorrow. The thing is, the weather is wholly unpredictable. Yesterday, we were expecting just cloudy skies. What we got was sleet in the morning and snow all day long. None of the snow stuck, but it still snowed all day long. I had planned to drive down to New Hampshire and try out this Mexican restaurant that a coworker raved about, but with the iffy weather, I just stayed home. I’ll go for Mexican another weekend when the weather is nicer and more predictable.  We are expecting some snow on Wednesday. One weather app says light snow and another says heavy snow. Who know if we will get either. The weather is unpredictable. About the only thing you can predict is that it will be cool enough for a sweater.

Fall Is Coming

The cooling off has finally begun. That’s not to say we won’t have another warm spell, but for at least the next ten days, our highs will be in the 60s. I love this type of weather. I hate the heat. I’m okay with the cold, but it’s the cooler temperature in the fall and spring that I crave.

Air Conditioning

It’s still hot, but my air conditioner came yesterday. No more cooling off in front of the fridge. It really is nice. When I got home yesterday, the temperature inside my bedroom was 95 degrees. I was sweating up a storm trying to get my air conditioner installed. I got it installed and it works wonderfully. I slept in coolness for the first time in my apartment. It was heaven.

Heat Wave

One of the reasons I moved out of the South was because of the heat. It was supposed to be cooler in Vermont. Temperatures are actually higher here in Vermont than they are in Alabama this week. I had to break down and buy an air conditioner. I’m not really supposed to have one in my apartment, but it’s too damn hot to survive without one. I live on the second floor and heat rises, making my apartment even hotter. I even took a cold shower, which helped for a few minutes, while I was in the shower, but it went back to being hot as soon as I got out. I hate the heat. I can only pray that my AC gets here before the projected July 5. At least the museum where I work has air conditioning. Who knew I’d be dying to go to work?

The Last Snow?

Last night, it was supposed to snow. We are getting close to the end of the snow season. I’ve been told we can get snow as late as May, but I think it’s winding down for the year. So one more night of snow, or at the very least ice, which is much more tricky. The news says that it will be a slick commute this morning. Luckily, I’m going in at 9 am, so maybe it won’t be as bad. I’m staying today until at least 5 pm to do some extra work on a special project. Hopefully, things will go smoothly with our special project.

UPDATE: If there was any ice or snow last night, I missed it. Everything was dry (relatively for mud season) and it was above freezing.

Snow Day

Today is supposed to be another day of snow. We are expecting 1-3 inches. I hope it’s not more than that. I know I complain about snow, even though I think it’s beautiful, it’s still a lot of work. I have enough to do without having to worry about what all extra I have to do on a snow day. Complaining is over.

Snow

While overnight we were expecting rain and warmer temperatures, snow has been on the ground the last couple of days. As a southerner, I get fascinated by snow. As someone who lives in Vermont, snow is quite aggravating. If I could stay home and watch it snow, I’d be happy for it to snow, snow, snow, but rarely do we have that luxury. We have to go to work which means getting out and scraping your car of ice and brushing off all the snow. I hate doing that. Which in turns means, I’ve begun to hate snow.

Just to clear something up, I was just ranting about snow. It still fascinates me. I’m just lazy some mornings and hate having to go scrape ice off my car. Brushing the snow off isn’t too bad.

Cold

Yesterday, we never got below freezing. Today, the high is supposed to be 17. Welcome to spring in Vermont.

Too Damn Much…

Snow, that is. With 18-24″ of snow over the past day, it’s just too much. It’s too much to drive in, too much to have to brush off your car, and too much to dig out your car. I like snow when I don’t have to go anywhere. I like it when I can look out my window and say, “How pretty.” But when I have to get out in it. When I have to sludge through the snow to my car, or when I have to hope and pray that my apartment owner gets someone out to plow the parking lot, that’s when it’s just too damn much snow.
